More Than CS

About Me

More about me beyond Computer Science and academics.

01

Nintendo

As you can probably tell from this website, I am a big Nintendo fan. Han Switch and parts of this website were inspired by Nintendo.

I respect Nintendo's copyright and read their terms of use while building this website. I do not use Nintendo logos, characters, game screenshots, or official assets.

I created all code, visuals, and UI elements from scratch. This is an unofficial personal project and is not affiliated with Nintendo.

If you are affiliated with Nintendo and find any part of this website inappropriate, please contact me.

It is difficult to explain who I am without talking about Nintendo. It has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember.

Nintendo was also one of the main reasons I became interested in Computer Science. I wanted to understand how games worked and eventually make one myself.

Nintendo Side Quest

One of many ways Nintendo changed my life

I used to weigh 108 kg, or around 238 pounds. I started boxing for two very reasonable reasons:

A

I wanted to improve my reaction time for Super Smash Bros.

B

I did not know what exercise to try, and I was playing Punch-Out!! at the time.

Boxing helped me lose around 40 kg, or 88 pounds.

So, am I good at boxing? Not really...

My reaction time improved, although I am apparently still naturally in the bottom 10 percent.

My boxing eventually became what I call diet boxing, but it still changed my life.

02

Germany

I am Korean, but I spent around twelve years living in Germany. Growing up between Korea and Germany had a much bigger impact on me than I realized at the time.

People usually assume that this means I speak three languages fluently.

Technically... yes...

I speak Korean, German, and English at a fluent or near-native level.

Each language feels more natural in different situations, and the balance changes depending on which one I use most.

So, if you apply floor(), I speak zero languages. If you apply ceil(), I speak three.

03

Communication

... I am also on my eternal journey to overcome shyness and communicate better 🫠

That line on the home page was not a joke. I am naturally a very shy person.

I think part of it came from moving between Germany and Korea when I was young. My language development was relatively slow, and I became extremely shy about speaking. For a long time, I rarely spoke unless someone directly addressed me.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to change this. I created a rule for myself.

Rule No. 1

If a teacher asks a question, raise my hand.

The idea was to raise my hand before I had enough time to overthink it.

Once my hand was up, I had no choice but to speak. Voluntarily.

Later, I added several more rules. One of them was to always say yes whenever I was given an opportunity to present something.

My first presentation was difficult. The next one felt slightly easier. Eventually, presenting started to feel normal.

Becoming a Teaching Assistant was also part of this process. I now speak, explain technical ideas, answer unexpected questions, and communicate with students.

People around me now see me as a social person. Even so, I still want to become a better communicator, so the journey continues.

04

Hobbies

I do not usually keep one hobby forever. I get deeply interested in something, spend one or two years learning it, and then find another one.

I enjoy becoming reasonably capable at unfamiliar things, even when I do not intend to master them. Each hobby usually leaves me with a new skill, perspective, or story.

Making Cocktails

One of my newest hobbies. My favourite drink is still the Old Fashioned.

Cooking

I have been cooking for years, but I am still afraid of knives, so I am very slow.

Baking

I have been nurturing the same batch of homemade vanilla extract for eight years now.

Bouldering

One of my more recent hobbies. I am still learning, but I am already hooked.
